Common Questions
Do my books need to be in a certain condition?
Yes. All books must be in 'good general condition' or better and meet our Condition Policy.
What kinds of books will you NOT buy?
CKY Books automated offering system is NOT able to flag some items and may make an offer on them even though we can not purchase them. Please familiarize yourself with the list below so you understand the item types we will not accept. It is your responsibility to be understand our Condition Policies and Item Types NOT ACCEPTED:

  • Teacher’s or Instructor’s Editions Textbooks.
  • International / Foreign Edition Textbooks / Eastern Economy Edition / Books that say “Not for Sale in the United States”
  • Custom Edition Textbooks. (textbooks printed for a specific school or university).
  • Advance reading copies, uncorrected proofs, and/or promotional copies of books.
  • Books that state “review copy”, “free copy”, “sample copy”, “examination copy”, “complimentary copy”, “not for resale”, etc… (or “not for sale”) anywhere on the book.
  • One-time use access codes & subscription/registration-based software/online course materials.
  • Partial sets or incomplete sets (i.e. only volume 1 of a 2 volume set).
  • Items where the ISBN the customer used does not match the ISBN of the ITEM.
  • Dated Materials/Books, Calendars and Daily Planners, Dated diaries or journals and Code Guides. (This includes law and code/tax guides that are now obsolete or have been superseded by a newer version.)
  • Book Club Editions
  • Ex-Library books ARE accepted but your payment amount will be 30% less than the quoted price – please note that ex-library books frequently have issues and make up the largest portion of all rejected items.
  • Repaired / ReBound Books – Books that have been repaired or rebound with tape/glue or other means
  • DVD’s and BluRay Movies missing valid DIGITAL HD Codes WHEN the title states they are part of the item will be reduced by 30%.
  • CD’s and Music must be retail versions in VERY GOOD CONDITION. We will not accept promotional copies, notched copies, club copies, etc.. Broken/Cracked CD/Jewel cases will not be accepted and the item will be rejected.

  • What kinds of books do you buy?
    We buy many kinds of books – not just used textbooks. We buy everything from reference texts to novels to audiobooks. You can view some of our most recent offers here.
    If I send you a book that you cannot purchase, can I get it back?
    Yes. Unlike many sites that automatically recycle all books that they cannot purchase, we will hold any rejected books for 15 days. We will gladly send them back, as long as you pay the return postage. After 15 days, they will be recycled or donated.
    What if my book has no ISBN?
    Unfortunately we can only purchase books that have an ISBN. If your book was published in the 1970's or earlier, it may not have an ISBN.
    Do you buy ex-library books?
    Yes, but at 30% less than the quoted price. Please note that ex-library books also make up the largest percentage of items we reject as they are usually in less than good condition.
    Can I sell you multiple copies of the same book?
    When you receive a quote for your book, a drop-down quantity field will appear under the offer. The greatest number of copies that this feature allows you to select is the greatest number of copies that our system will allow you to sell. Please do not create multiple orders or accounts to circumvent our quantity thresholds; this is prohibited in our Terms of Service. If you would like to sell us more copies than it will allow you to select, you can contact us at info@ckybooks.com to see if we can make an exception.
    What is a UPC?
    A UPC is an acronym for Universal Product Code. The UPC is a 12 digit number usually found on the back of your item by the barcode
    Do you buy items without a UPC?
    We do not purchase items without a UPC.
    What types of items do you buy?
    We currently buy Blu-Ray and DVDs in very good contition. We do NOT buy VHS or other obsolete media.
    What kind of items do I have to watch out for?
    We will not buy unauthorized items. Items not produced by the original manufacturer/publisher! We will only buy the original manufacturer produced item. We will not buy user burned DVDs, CDs. We will not buy 3rd party license copies (for example BMG issued items). We will not buy counterfeit, illegally produced or pirated items.
    What condition should my items be in?
    Items must be in very good condition or better which means that the items must meet the following criteria:
  • Cover or casing should not be broken, i.e. it should not have any cracks, breaks, missing pieces.
  • All packaging should be included and complete. For example: DVDs should have all artwork, inserts, etc that came in original packaging, etc;
  • Any media (CDs, DVD, Blu-Ray, etc) should have no scratches. We do not play test every CD, DVD, Video Game we receive. So they must pass a visual inspection.
  • Absolutely no water or moisture damage - stains, rings, etc.
  • No fire or smoke damage.
  • No strong odor of any kind (including musty odor, cigar or cigarette odor).
  • No items that state not for resale (or not for sale) anywhere on the cover or inside.
  • No ex-library items.
  • No partial sets (ie, only sending DVD 1 of a 2 volume set).
  • We DO NOT accept Brand New unopened DVDs because we are unable to verify if the items are acquired legitimately as well if the item is authentic.

    Items received that do not meet these requirements will not be paid.

    It is your responisbility to read and understand our policies and Terms of Service.

    Items damaged during shipment are not our responsibility and will be treated as unacceptable.

  • How does this work?
    We make the buyback process as fast and simple as possible. You enter the ISBN(s) of the book(s) you want to sell. You receive quotes for each item entered. You confirm your and print a USPS, FedEx or UPS shipping label. You send us the books. We check the order for accuracy and quality. We mail you a check or send you an instant payment via PayPal.
    What is an ISBN?
    An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is the 10-digit or 13-digit number that our system uses to identify and price each book in our database. You can usually find it on the back of your book by the barcode. If it is not located there, or if there are store stickers on your book, you can always find the correct ISBN number on the copyright page of your book.
    Is there a minimum order?
    Yes, to complete your order you must have an order total of at least $20.00. We have this minimum in place to allow us to provide all of our customers with free shipping. It is possible to negate your FREE shipping! If you circumvent the order minimum of $20.00 by not sending all items in your order, the shipping charges we incur will be deducted from your payment amount. This charge will be a minimum of $5.00.
    Is the shipping really free?
    Yes. We offer FedEx or UPS. We no longer offer USPS as they are not able to provide the level of service we require.


    It is possible to negate your FREE shipping! If you circumvent the order minimum of $20.00 by not sending all items in your order, the shipping charges we incur will be deducted from your payment amount. This charge will be a minimum of $5.00.

    Are there any hidden costs/fees in the buyback process?
    No! The entire process is completely free to you. We will even pay the PayPal fee if you choose to be paid via PayPal.

    How long does it take for my books to get there?
    Transit times vary depending on the shipping option that you choose.
  • FedEx takes about 3-5 business days to reach our warehouse.
  • UPS takes about 3-6 business days to reach our warehouse.
  • Will you share my personal information?
    We only collect the data necessary for us to complete your buyback order.

    I forgot my password. What do I do?
    How long do I have to send my order?
    Each order created has a ship by date. To insure your quoted price please do not ship later than that date.
    How long are prices valid in my cart?
    Your cart will expire in 12 hours if you don't complete the transaction.
    How long do I have to send my order?
    Each order created has a ship by date (It is approximately 96hrs/4days). To insure your quoted price please do not ship later than that date. Orders submitted to the carrier after the ship by date are subject to being re-priced by our inspectors.
    Can I make changes to my order?
    Yes. To add a book to your order:
  • print out the onscreen offer page for the extra book and attach it to your packing slip
  • or email your order number and the ISBN of the book that you want to add to info@ckybooks.com.
    If you would like to remove a book from your order:
  • mark the item(s) out on your packing slip (draw a line through it and mark the quantity as zero)
  • How should a package my books?
    Please carefully package your books to avoid damage in transit. We recommend cushioning your books with bubble wrap, plastic bags or paper and placing them in a sturdy box. View our suggestions here.
    How do I ship my order?
    If your order is $20 or more, you can choose either USPS, FedEx or UPS.
  • USPS takes about 7-14 business days. Post Office shipping is often unreliable, with higher risks of damage or loss.
  • FedEx takes about 3-5 business days. Tracking and Insurance is included.
  • UPS takes about 3-6 business days. Tracking and Insurance is included.
  • Do you accept orders from outside the United States?
    No, we are only able to accept orders from within the contiguous US.
    How can I check on the status of my order?
    We will send you an automated message when we receive your order, after your order has been inspected for accuracy and quality, and when we issue your payment. You can also check the status of your order by logging in to your CKY Books account and viewing your "Previous Orders."
    How will I know when my order is delivered?
    We will send you an email when we receive your order.
    What if my order is lost while in transit?
    • Orders sent via FedEx and UPS. We have you covered. We pay you and we file a claim with the carrier.
    • Orders sent USPS – the hard truth is that if you did not opt to purchase insurance at your own expense then the shipment is gone and no payment will be issued.
    What if my items are damaged in transit?
    It is your responsibility, as the shipper, to ensure your items are properly protected and packaged for shipment! We can only evaluate the items in the condition in which we they are delivered to us by the carrier.

    CKY will amend or reject payment amounts for those items that do not meet our Condition Policies & Guidelines.

    CKY will assist in filing a claim, with the carrier, if your shipment was sent using FedEx or UPS; the dispensation of any claim is ultimately the decision of the carrier.

    USPS shipments can only be insured by the shipper, any claim for damages must be filed by the shipper with the USPS, and only if you purchased insurance prior to shipping.

    Are there any known browser issues?
    Yes. If you are using an incompatible browser you should receive a message like this:

      These browsers are modern, stable and hardened; completely free and available for install on all operating systems.
    When will I be paid for my order?
    Physical proximity to our warehouse, weather, and seasonal workloads can affect transit times, which in turn affects when your payment is made. As a general guideline:

  • USPS Shipping - the average is 11 days
  • FedEx or UPS Shipping - the average is 6 days
  • What does my order status mean?
      Pending: Default status of all orders upon their creation. It will remain "Pending"; until we receive it.
      Received: Your order has now arrived at our warehouse.
      Received-Partial: If we have only received part of what was expected with your order, your order will be marked "Received-Partial."; For example: you shipped your order in two boxes that arrive on two different days. When we receive the first box, the order will be marked "Received-Partial."; It will be not be inspected until we receive the rest of the order.
      Pending Inspection: Your order is being inspected for quality and accuracy by our trained staff.
      To Be Paid: The inspection of your order is complete. Payment should be issued within 1 business day.
      Paid: Your payment has been issued. If you are being paid via PayPal, your instant payment has been made. If you are being paid via check, your check has been issued and is being mailed to you.
      Cancelled: You have decided not to sell us your books and asked for us to cancel your buyback order.
      Declined: None of the items included with your order meet our condition guidelines, or we did not receive what we expected with the order, and we are not currently purchasing the items that we did receive.
    If I send you a book that you cannot purchase, can I get it back?

    Why is the amount that I was paid different from the amount that I was quoted?
    If we receive a book that does not meet our condition guidelines, it will either be reduced in price by 30% or rejected, based on the severity of the problem. Any changes to your order will be emailed to you after the order has been inspected, and when your payment is issued.
